International Women’s Day:

Today is the 100th anniversary of the first official International Women’s Day. I love that the day is celebrated during the Sun’s time in Pisces. Pisces is pure feminine energy, pure yin.

Interestingly Venus, the goddess of love and beauty and representative of the manifestation of our feminity was travelling through the sign of Aries at the time this day was first proposed and created. Aries represents our pioneering energy, so of course (!) the woman who first proposed such a day was Clara Zetkin, a German politician and women’s rights activist, a true female prioneer of her generation.  She fought for social and democratic rights in Germany, particularly on behalf of woman well into her 70s, finally dying in Russia after she was exiled from Hitler’s Germany. Wow!

This is the day to celebrate every aspect of being a woman, but in particular it is about Read the rest of this entry »

The joy of December!

SouthMoltonStreetLights09 My favourite time of the year! It really shouldn’t be, it is dark and cold and dreary here in the UK, but we’re such a clever bunch…

we’ve turned all the dark, cold, dreariness into a ton of fun!! Lots of pretty lights, warm fires, roasting chestnuts, tacky decorations and lots of unnecessary nonsense in the shops that is such fun to trawl through…  Best of all it is the time of the year we take to celebrate family and friends.

Much attention is given to the way we abuse this season simply by either throwing money at it or allowing ourselves to become so stressed with trying to meet either our own or others’ expectations of us. My view is that if that is the way you choose to experience the season it is your responsibility, your choice. You can choose how you react to everything around you.

I choose to see the joy in the season, to find the ridiculously tacky reindeer decorations etc. huge fun, to feel the excitement of the hustle and bustle on the pavements in front of the shops, to love coming indoors out of the cold to a warm fire and the laughter of my children (okay, I admit, sometimes they’re yelling and screaming!!!), to revel in the anticipation of sharing time and gifts with my friends and my family.  I adore the way the shops, the streets and our homes are lit up with coloured lights – so inviting!

Bonfire Night – a community spirit!

Fireworks It is Guy Fawkes Day in the UK today. I love Bonfire Night! As a child in Swaziland we used to have a straw stuffed pair of overalls, representing “Guy”, who rather macabrely was placed on top of a big bonfire and allowed to burn to everyones’ cheers. I won’t get into the origins of the event here, suffice to say it is a very British thing, and it has metamorphasized into a wonderful excuse for some fun.  The local western community would all get together to stand around and enjoy the primeval draw of a large fire while enjoying beer and wine and connecting with friends and the community in general.  For us kids it it was the ultimate experience… fireworks, sparklers, a huge fire to fuel our excitement and plenty of room to run around in in wild abandon. I loved the sense of community the event brought to us all, young and old.
