Life Purpose: Discovery Is Not Enough!
So now you know your life purpose… what are you doing with it? How are you using it to move from where you are to where you want to be?
When you finally discovered what your life purpose was it felt so exciting (or did it feel disappointing?), and then you got home and the fear kicked in… it’s too much, too overwhelming…there is no way this is me… nice fantasy but far safer to pretend than to actually move towards it… I’d need to change my job to do that but I can’t,
I need the money… I don’t have the time to take all that on… and so on. What do you say to yourself? What are the reasons you don’t embrace your life purpose?
The following is one of my favourite quotes of all time…
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear s that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, what are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
An Excerpt from A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson
I share Marianne’s words because she voices my beliefs so succinctly, plus she writes so beautifully! If you glossed over it please re-read it and take in her words and concepts, really take them in, let them soak into your subconscious.
90% of our actions are governed by our subconscious, our automatic behaviours. It takes time and conscious effort to
change our behaviours, especially if we are fighting against underlying beliefs we don’t even realise we have until we actually think about them. A typical one is that we believe we are not that special, not worthy, not deserving, not that skilled… If you feel that way underneath there is a very good chance you will
subconsciously self-sabotage. In life we will always get what we expect. You
need to change what you believe is possible to change your results. Start by
looking at your life purpose to think about what might really be possible for
you.
If you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same
results!
It’s time to ACTIVATE your Life Purpose. It’s time to
INTEGRATE it into your life. It’s time to LIVE it!
ACTIVATING your life
purpose is simply taking it on board, accepting it and beginning to develop a
conscious way of living, being conscious of what is going on around you and how
you are responding. It is not about judging yourself or beating yourself up
about what you do, it is just about noticing what you do.
INTEGRATING
your life purpose is about allowing your life purpose to inform your actions.
Here is one set of steps that are key to begin life purpose
integration:
- Uncover your life purpose.
Know what it is. Know what will give your life the meaning and fulfilment you
seek. Know what you are aiming for. (If you haven’t done this already see below
on how to).
- Understand your Achilles’ heel.
Understand what it is that hold’s you back, get’s in your way or stops you.
This is your Life Lesson, the core basis for the various challenges you keep
coming up against.
- Learn to recognise your Life
Lesson
when it shows up. - Know what action you
need to take
in response to the way you Life Lesson shows up. - Now you know what it looks like, be conscious, look out for your
Life Lesson
and when it does show up, STOP. Do not fall into thesubconscious response you have used in the past. Be conscious, feel the
fear and take the action you need to anyway.
It is
your habitual response to you Life Lesson, the challenges you encounter, that is
what keeps you stuck. It’s the underlying beliefs you hold about what is
possible for you that keeps you stuck.
Belief change feels difficult,
mostly because you can’t decide what belief to replace it with. What I suggest
is that you think about what the fundamental belief is that keeps you stuck and
then ask yourself what you would need to believe to be able to overcome what
holds you back. Some examples of beliefs that hold you back are: I don’t have
enough money. I’m not good enough. I’m no good at communicating. What will
people think? I don’t have enough time.
Here is a very effective group
of questions I picked up from David Shepherd (The Performance Partnership) that
is really useful in helping you to change your beliefs:
Questioning a belief you hold:
- How would you know if it were NOT true?
- For whom is it not
true?
- When was it not true for you?
- In what way
do you KNOW it is not true now?
- What do you WANT to believe
instead?
- In what ways do you know what you want to believe is
already true?
I also like David’s follow-up comments:
“Reasons not to what you really want to do = excuses. Successful people don’t
allow themselves excuses. Don’t allow yourself to believe yours or anyone
else’s bullshit!” That one makes me laugh out loud, mostly at
myself!
So to LIVE your life purpose you really need to believe in it, to
believe that your life purpose belongs to you and that you really can create a
life that honours your purpose, that honours the essential you, a happy,
fulfilling life because you deserve it!
It isn’t enough to know your
life purpose, you need to LIVE it too!
How are you expressing your life
purpose today?
